Our Mission
William H. Prescott, the famous
American historian, said architecture is "the surest test
of civilization." Surely, the House of the Temple stands
the test. Its careful blending of several classic architectural
styles make it a unique representative of the many cultures that
have contributed to world civilization and provided the sources
for our Order's rich philosophy, which can truly be called universal.
Sustaining this architectural monument in pristine condition is
a worthy mission for all Scottish Rite Masons.
During the biennium, we have been
able to conduct ongoing work toward this goal due to the support
by Brethren of the House of the Temple Historical Preservation
Foundation, Inc., and, in particular, donations from the annual
Scottish Rite calendar program. Maintaining the building is an
immense task. For 86 years, the House of the Temple has been the
hub of Scottish Rite Administration in the Southern Jurisdiction,
and many of its basic systems - such as roofing, electrical supply,
and climate control - have exceeded their normal longevity and
have had to be replaced or significantly upgraded. In addition
to these improvements, maintenance itself becomes even more essential
as the building ages. Yet, the House of the Temple's basic structure
was built for all time by Brethren of visions, and it is both
a privilege and an honor to continue the great work they began
in 1911, nearly a century ago.
